Those of you who have read my blog for a while will know that I absolutely adore Laurie Wisbrun’s Donkeys and Boots fabric. Who would have thought of putting a donkey in wellie boots – and such stylish ones at that? Laurie has this knack of creating beautifully fun fabric. Not only are the donkeys just the cutest thing I’ve seen, but the colours are just perfect – so bright and modern!
When I originally spoke to Laurie about designing a quilt using her fabrics she said she liked my “There’s a Square in There” pattern. With that in mind I substituted the white fabric for some coordinating Kona Cotton solids to keep with Laurie’s bright fun style of fabric, and made the rectangular blocks ‘wonky’. I hadn’t tried wonky piecing before, but it was so much fun and it meant I could call it Wonky Donkey! I used the ‘stack and slash’ method again; an easy way to create improvisational style quilts without cutting individual strips, making it easy and fast.
I made a simply pieced back using Kona Cotton aqua and little scraps of donkeys and boots fabric. I quilted in the ditch around a few of the blocks just to stabilize the whole quilt, and then hand quilted circles of various sizes with perle cotton No. 8.
I then bound it using left over solid fabric. It was an absolute pleasure to make and I love how it’s turned out.
And here’s Fizzy showcasing it beautifully. Unfortunately he refused to wear the wellie boots! You know how they say never to work with children and animals. Well I have a new motto “Donkeys on quilts, not quilts on donkeys.”
And now for the free pattern and fabric! Laurie and I are both hosting a giveaway. Two lucky winners will receive my pattern as well as ½ yard of Donkey fabric and ½ yard of Boots fabric. To enter just leave a comment on my blog telling me how you think you would quilt your wonky donkey quilt (circles, straight lines, around the blocks, machine, hand, something else?).
Then head over to Laurie's blog for a second chance to win. We will each randomly pick a winner on Thursday June 24th. Good luck!

Addit: Quilt pattern is available as an instant download from the downloadable patterns page. 20% off while giveaway is going (I'll reimburse the winners).
I love the name Wonky Donkey. I think I might quilt a wonky donkey quilt with straight lines. They would have to be random straight lines just to keep the wonky going.
ReplyDeleteNow, if this isn't the most perfect way to showcase your Wonky Donkey quilt, I don't know what is!! I love it!! If there were a prize to win, you'd win it. :)
ReplyDeleteQuilting.... I would probably use my fall back of doing a meandering stipple only because that's 'bout all I can do. If I was feeling more confident and comfortable with that, I would do some free motion designs (rather than random squiggles), like maybe big raindrop shapes to play off of the wellies?
Great quilt. I'll have to try the stack and slash to make this kind of wonky squares in squares.
I love your quilt, I love the wonkiness and all the colours you used that showed off Laurie's fabrics perfectly! I think I would quilt it with circles, like you did, but with intersecting circles of varying sizes. The circles will play off the wonky squares nicely. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI'm not bhrave enough yet to do anything other than straightline quilting but I might try my hand at hand quilting this beauty
ReplyDeleteI love this donkey fabric and quilt. My inlaws have a donkey and it would be fun to make them this quilt. I would have to have them take pictures like yours. I think I would hand quilt wavy lines using different colors.
ReplyDeletethis is such a great giveaway. this fabric is so cute. it would be so fun to make this quilt. i think i would straight line machine quilt it, either in a grid pattern or just side by side lines.
ReplyDeleteI love it! And showcasing it with a donkey was a great idea (even if it was a pain!!) I just love all of Laurie's fabrics...and these donkeys are just so cute!
ReplyDeleteI would probably do a meandering stipple on a quilt like this (only because that's what I can do). But, I most certainly might do some simple stitch-in-the-ditch quilting instead so I can attempt some hand quilting with some bright cotton perle thread to add some interest!
What fun!
Wonky Donkey is the most perfect name for this quilt - plus I love the colors - what a fun quilt and fabric!! I'd do an allover circle pattern or swirls in a contrasting bright cotton thread. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteawesome giveaway Kate! i would straight line quilt something like this...I love the closely machine quilted straight lines!! love it!
ReplyDeleteI'm loving this quilt! And I think Fizzy is too! I love the circle quilting you did...I would do something similar, but more of it with lots of different sized circles.
ReplyDeleteI think the quilt would also look great with slightly crooked vertical lines stitched close together. I love how your pattern works so well with the fabrics!
ReplyDeleteKamal
monahtkm (at) gmail (dot) com
I would do straight lines!
ReplyDeleteI would hand quilt it using various contrasting s-twist cord thread (i.e. using a pink on blue fabric, orange on purple, purple on pink, etc); for the design I would use masking tape to tape off echoing squares and quilt around the masking tape.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is beautiful. I love the navy to bring contrast.
ReplyDeleteI think a quilting pattern of a boot motif which would standout against the solids would be fun.
A beautiful quilt! I think I would quilt mine with straight lines around the squares!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely machine quilting - I think I'm the world's hand quilter. I would probably quilt it with straight lines - outline straight lines. Cute quilt and even cuter donkey!
ReplyDeleteDifferent sized triangles would be cool.
ReplyDeleteLove the donkey! Such a good model ;¬)
ReplyDeleteI think this fabric would definitely quilt best in squares or rectangles, the print would get lost in hexagons. I love postcard quilts so perhaps I'd go for that or very simple wonky squares with a plain border, maybe even getting wonkier and wonkier (like trapezoids) working out from the middle. Hmm, I kind of like that idea!
LOVE the quilt! I've always been a big fan of these fabrics. I'm very new to quilting so I think I'd go with diagonal lines. The circles look wonderful though...would love to take a try at hand quilting.
ReplyDeleteJealous of the donkey! Laurie's fabrics are my favorite. And the donkeys and wellies are at the top of my fav list! What a cute quilt you've made~and a sweet pea of donkey!
ReplyDeleteOh so cute! And I love that uses a small amount of a precious fabric to really show it off. I would quilt it with my old standby, stippling. I find it's a great quilting design for wonky and modern quilts.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! And Fizzy is a very well-behaved donkey...
ReplyDeleteI'd use straight-ish lines that echo the angles of the piecing.
So far I can only quilt in the ditch anyway, so I guess I'd be limited to going round each wonky square...
ReplyDeleteI think I'd go with some wonky straight lines!
ReplyDeleteWith joy at having won!
ReplyDeleteProbably straight lines - not having mastered free motion quilting - randomly placed in keeping with the wonky elements
Chris x
I really really LOVE this quilt! It is super cute! I really love your circles all over the quilt, but I am really no good at circles, at least not perfect ones, so I would probably do squares or random rectangles all over.
ReplyDeleteIt's almost too much to grasp. After you make a Wonky Donkey, you can actually do a photo shoot with your own donkey!
ReplyDeleteI'd do the nice straight line close quilting that I'm doing on mod quilts lately.
adorable quilt, and donkey! I'd probably quilt around the squares. straight lines are my friend right now!
ReplyDeleteI would do wonky donkey straight lines that intersect at weird angles.
ReplyDeleteI love your pattern.
Tooo cute! I think i'd quilt around the blocks, although i've been dying to try a quilt with random lines that meet as triangles, that might look cool too!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! Love it! Maybe some Denyse Schmidt type loopies? I don't know...I think wonky straight line quilting would look great on this quilt too!
ReplyDeleteI would do wonky squares in between each border of the squares! (handquilted, as I don't have a walker foot yet!)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this quilt and the donkey!! I wish I had my own donkey..and a llama too..anyways as for quilting I am a newbie so would most likely be lines. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. That quilt is so adorable but I think Fizzy might be upstaging it with his cuteness!! I would probably quilt this with either straight lines or some loopy loops.
ReplyDeleteI would straight line hand quilt with DMC in a selection of matching and contrasting colours - possibly in the ditch which I know is not in fashion at the moment but I think it would work on this one because of the use of solids. This quilt is fabulous, Kate, you have such an eye for colour and shape and I wish I had it too! X
ReplyDeleteFun quilt with awesome fabric! I'd quilt in a square design around and around each block until I got to the center. I think that would really make the blocks stand out! Thanks for a chance to win!
ReplyDeleteThis is so darned cute! I love it & your photos with the donkey are brilliant!
ReplyDeleteI'd probably use straight line stitches, mainly because that's all I feel comfortable with & I sure wouldn't want to ruin it!
swirls! I love quilting with swirls (by machine).... I can add in loops or hearts, or words, and it always looks great.
ReplyDeleteLove the donkey fabric!!!
So cute! I would quilt it using straight lines going in both directions. I love the grid look it gives quilts.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is great and i really love the donkey pictures. I would probably machine quilt this quilt because I don't hand quilt. I think I would do a grid pattern, but loosely, not in perfect straight or evenly spaced lines.
ReplyDeleteMeandering all-over quilting!
ReplyDeleteWow, I LOVE your quilt and the name is so fitting! I think it'd be fun to make this quilt by doing the "quilt as you go" idea. I don't know, I've never done it before, but I could see it for this one.
ReplyDeleteWell, I would probably stick the quilt into my frame at an angle, and just quilt the top half one way, adjust the angle quilt the rest of it another way, and then turn it 90 degrees and probably do the same thing again.
ReplyDeleteCompletely cute!!! I would quilt it with straight lines, because I am a beginner. But boy, would I love to do it!!!!
ReplyDeleteLike other folks here I'm new to quilting, so I'd go for straight line quilting. What a great pattern & fabric! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love fizzy .. I want to give him a little hug. I would probably do some straight lines - that seems to be my thing right now.
ReplyDeleteRight off the bat....I love your new header! The donkey reminds me of the one I used to ride at my cousins house as a child...it was stubborn too! The quilt is fab, I'd love to make one and quilt it with wonky straightish lines!
ReplyDeleteThis pattern is perfect for the fabric! I think I'd like to machine quilt in a grid, then hand quilt around a few of the donkeys with perle cotton.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win!

Beautiful fabric, quilt, and donkey photos. LOL!
ReplyDeleteSewCalGal
www.sewcalgal.blogspot.com
such a wonderful quilt. & I love your model too ;)
ReplyDeleteI think I'd quilt in the 'wonky' straight line style.
x
Really like your quilt and also the quilted circles, i would also go for circles and maybe handquilt one or two donkeys on the solids. thanks for the great give-away !
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI really like the quilt. I have not quilted a quilt yet but I do like the circles with the squares.
ReplyDeletelbroadstreet@tds.net
This is pretty cute! Nice balance between straight lines and circles. I wouldn't stipple. I'd do straight lines for sure, kinda wonky but straight lines never the less.
ReplyDeleteI just love this quilt and have been waiting for inspiration to cut into the little bit of it I have! I would quilt small circles in a varagated thread, but really am so in love with your quilting, might have to give the hand quilting a go. Thanks for such great inspiration!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous fabric & pattern. I think i would hand quilt large flowers over each block with a smaller circle in the centre of each block. x
ReplyDeleteI love these pictures! Hilarious. I think I'd quilt it using some random straight lines. Thanks for the fun giveaway!
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures!!
ReplyDeleteI think I'd quilt with straight lines. Maybe on the diagonal or vertical but not evenly spaced. I actually really like your mix of circles and lines and machine and hand!
I love this quilt! I think I would quilt it with straight lines OR with swirls :)
ReplyDeleteI would do a repeat of wellies for sure.
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt! I'd use wonky straight lines and wonky hand quilted straight lines to quilt it!
ReplyDeleteThis is SO cute, I LOVE it!!! I think I would use different shades of pink with a little turquoise thrown in for contrast! Love, love, love it! And Fizzy models beautifully!
ReplyDeleteSo cool Kate - totally my colours and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that fabric!!!
ReplyDeleteGoing to be a winner for sure :)
So, I would quilt it by hand because I can't machine and think I would go with circles out of perle dmc.
AWESOME donkey photoshoot too!!!!
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteOops! I forgot to say that I would probably do the same meandering loopy quilting I do on everything. I am nervous doing straight line quilting without a walking foot. Has anyone tried it? How big of a problem are puckers and fabric wandering?
ReplyDeleteLOVE the donkey!
Very very cute. I absolutely love this fabric and this pattern shows it off so well.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to add that I would probably free motion quilt it but that quilting in each square along the wonkiness would be fun too.
ReplyDeleteI would probably just do random straight lines going across the quilt, nothing to take away for the sweet donkeys!
ReplyDeleteAll I can do is straight line quilting - still a novice quilter. I love this quilt!!
ReplyDeletei've never thought of handquilting, but i love the circles you did, and the quilt...maybe i'd try my hand at circles or squares, but not in the ditch in the middle of the squares. i've also machine quilted elephants on a baby quilt, so maybe i'd do donkeys on this one or boots? that would be fun! love the quilt!
ReplyDeleteI would do straight lines with a raindrop shape every now and then. What a fun summer quilt!!!
ReplyDeleteI think it would be cute to see this quilted with rain drops and puddle rings, even with an occassional umbrella tossed into the mix. Wonderful giveaway.
ReplyDeletelove this! and wonky donkey is perfect... i've actually never sewn a quilt before (i do clothes and softies primarily), so i'm not sure WHAT i would do to finish it! i've really been wanting to try my first quilt, though after seeing so many beautiful pictures online... i also do crewel work and love hand embroidery, so i would probably end up finishing by hand.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd do a loop-d-loop pattern or wonky straight line quilting
ReplyDeleteDefinitely machine quilting, probably a modern straight line design. Thanks for the chance to win - I love your pattern!! Tell Fizzy hi for me, and also from Donkey Boy and Johnny Boy, our neighbor's two donkeys. They are excited that one of their own has become famous!
ReplyDeleteI'm just starting out with free motion, so it would depend on how well I'm doing with it. If well enough, I would probably do lots of loops, otherwise it would be straight machine stitching.
ReplyDeleteblessed.mama4 at yahoo dot com
Fizzy looks so happy :D I have not made a quilt before, i think i'm going to do straight lines and machine quilt.
ReplyDeleteI think this pattern is great. I love how you've just used a little bit of the print, and then all the different bright solids. It makes the quilt so affordable to make. I think I'd do some outlining of the squares with the machine, then I love the idea of doing some hand stitching with perle cotton. I'd use some bright contrasting colors so they really stuck out - sort of in a sashiko look. Maybe in a raindrop pattern to match the wellies.
ReplyDeleteI've only ever finished one quilt (and I machine quilted it myself) but if I made it I think this quilt would need to have wonky machine stithced lines all across it!
ReplyDeletelove the thought of that photo shoot you must have had! Too funny!
ReplyDeleteI think I would quilt it in a square pattern going around the blocks. Great fabric and pattern!
I would make a baby quilt for my first baby ... in the future haha ... I think I would have to sew in straight lines for my first sewing venture with my new machine from mum.
ReplyDeleteI'd probably do a stipple, just because it's so fast.
ReplyDeleteNettiepete at gmail dot com
What a gorgeous quilt using some of my favorite fabric! I've been wanting to try a quilt - I think I'd use straight lines in the fabric cuts with wandering machine quilting for a contrast.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how I would quilt it except perle cotton for sure! I've been WAAAAAIIIITING to see this quilt. Love your pattern and Laurie's fabric (so glad I already have some, so now I'm off to get the pattern!)
ReplyDeletei love this fabric! i have coveted it for an age. i have seen this great continous quilting pattern of a bear, wouldn't it be great to change it to a donket=y and have donkey quilting in a line???
ReplyDeleteLOVE this fabric! If I made a quilt with it, I'd machine quilt it in either a stipple or straight lines (not edge-to-edge straight lines necessarily; perhaps right angle lines, if you can envision that).
ReplyDeleteWith a quilt that features donkeys (in wellies!), it simply *must* be wonky! The pattern is fabulous! Love the colors and how they feature the fabric so nicely.
ReplyDeleteI tend to quilt designs -- but only super simple ones! I don't know how to stipple (yet), so I make patterns with squares and wavy lines. For this one, I'd go for vertical wonky lines.
Thanks for the chance to enter!
I think I'd go with large stars. This fabric is F-U-N.
ReplyDeleteCarolyn
What a fabulous pattern. It suits the fabric down to the ground. I would quilt the quilt simply maybe straight lines on the cross.
ReplyDeleteAwesome pattern and fabric! I just love your quilt and great pics on Fizzy! Beautifully done, Kate!
ReplyDeletejoan
just gotta say that fizzy has theee most adorable profile! I'd go with randomly spaced vertical lines, I think...sort of straight, but not quite. Thanks for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteHmm...I thought I left a comment earlier, but I don't think it actually saved, so I will try again. I really love your pictures of the donkey with the quilt. The quilt is beautiful and the donkey just makes it even better. I would quilt it with wonkey, I mean wonky, lines across the whole thing. I am hoping I will because that fabric is just so darn cute!
ReplyDeleteI think I'd quilt around each block. I'd want to show off as much of the fabric as possible. I love your blog and your work is just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI love the donkeys and what girl doesn't want those groovy rainboots,I would quilt crazy lines thru the quilt but missing the donkey so he would stand out of course.
ReplyDeleteThink I would stitch-in-the-ditch these really cute blocks. Hope to win! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI am IN LOVE!!! Seriously you are AMAZING!!! I'm so getting that pattern and fabric. YUM!! Thanks:)
ReplyDeleteOops forgot to leave how I'd quilt it. I'm lovin the circles and wonder how you do it - I'm not to heavy into quilting - have done some and love them! I like the idea of quilting it a bit wonky around those donkeys. Love that name;)
I love this quilt! It's so cute :)
ReplyDeleteI have just started machine quilting so I think I would either stitch wonky/wavy vertical lines or I would use machine stitching to stitch in the ditch and then hand quilt around some of the blocks. Thanks for the chance! :)
I think I would like to quilt it with some perle thread. What would actually happen would be a trip to a long armer as I have no space for basting. This would mean I wouldalso be able to user it sooner than if it waited for me to fussy quilt it.
ReplyDeleteFizzy the Donkey is a natural, and the perfect choice for modelling your quilt!
ReplyDeleteI would handquilt and since I'm quite fond of quilting with cotton perle or embroidery thread I would have to consider that :)
so cute! I might do some wonky straight lines!
ReplyDeleteLOVE love love your quilt!! I would quilt a Wonky Donkey quilt using some machine quilting in the ditch to stabilise the blocks. Then I'd have fun with hand-quilting - swirly lines around a few wellies and donkeys. Have you got the Wonky Donkey book for your kids? Mine love it. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt. To quilt, maybe curvy lines.
ReplyDeleteI would love to quilt wonky donkey in a custom pattern design using either a splash or donkey tail pattern. Hopefully winning the fabric will give me the chance to create either pattern!
ReplyDeleteI'd quilt it with a combination of machine and hand quilting and I liked someone's idea of a raindrop shape since he is in Wellies.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great design and quilt! And the perfect way to show it off. I would use wonky lines in hand quilting. One has to push the theme to the extrem ;-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the give-away!
Have a nice day
Daniela from France
This just made my day! I made a chicken quilt and I have some young hens, but I don't think I would try to put the quilt on them. What I want to know is, did you TRY putting the wellies on Fizzie? Now, that's a picture I'd love to see..
ReplyDeleteI adore your mix of hand/machine quilting! It's about time someone broke that rule! I might try some wonky lines, or a meander in boot shape! Thanks for the giveaway!
Love the quilt.. I too mix machine and hand quilting on my quilts.. I am better at hand than machine but am hoping with practice to get better at the machine - sooooooooo much quicker than by hand.
ReplyDeleteI would do some random donkey's and boots with some meandering.
I think the circles are great, but being new to quilting, I think I'd do straight lines, either on the diagonal, or at random angles to go with the "wonky" boxes.
ReplyDeletebridgit at tomcook dot net
I love this fabric and the quilt design. I'm partial to quilting a quarter inch inside each seam. I'm curious to know what is the "Stack and Slash" method.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this fabric! I would probably just stitch in the ditch quilt it... but that's the easiest way I've found for my items to look nice ;o) If I didn't do that then I would probably take it to be machine quilted.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt! I love it! I would quilt it like you did - I love the partial circles!
ReplyDeleteJennifer
jennifereladd at yahoo dot com
I would quilt it in circles if I knew how to do machine quilting...
ReplyDeleteIn keeping with the wonky theme, I would, most likely, quilt it with straight lines, but going "wonkily" across the quilt. I LOVE this fabric so much!
ReplyDeleteI would most likely quilt in squares, because I like geometric quilting. I love your Wonky Donky idea!
ReplyDeleteI would use straight lines. I just love this fabric and what a great name for the pattern and how fun to have a real donkey to go with it!
ReplyDeleteAmanda R.
I think I would quilt this amazing quilt with a wavy line throughout!
ReplyDeletedoing most of my own quilting, I stick with the straight lines. I love how they can get a little wonky.
ReplyDelete-carriechilton@gmail.com
I really love this quilt the pictures are fabulous. I'd do the nice straight line close quilting that I'm doing on mod quilts lately.
ReplyDeleteLove this quilt and I am super exxcited to say I get to meet Laurie this Thursday in Austin. I would quilt this in a wonky line pattern, although I would love to learn to do circles.
ReplyDeleteDoes the donkey come too? Love your quilt and a know a little boy who just had his 4th birthday who would love it... Since it would be well used I would have it machine quilted in those odd over lapping multiple circles. Those cover a lot of quilt territory and make things sturdier and he wouldn't have to wait forever while I hand quilted it!
ReplyDeleteI would hand-quilt around the blocks & animals, then do some random machine quilting around the edges/trim.
ReplyDeleteThat is just too cute with Fizzy!! I have newbie quilting skills, so I'd probably do straight lines across the diagonal. If I had the money, I would take it to a long arm quilter and probably do a circle pattern of some variety.
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt! The fabric is darling & the design is great, plus...your model did a fabulous job! Too cute. I'd quilt it using mostly straight lines & then some wonky randam stippling in various blocks.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, that is super cute. I'd probably hand quilt around the blocks and maybe some of the other details. My mother-in-law likes to hand quilt so we would do it together.
ReplyDeleteI love these prints!!! And the pattern is super cute too. I'd hand quilt in the solids using some perle cotton, I think, probably squares.
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is the cutest thing I've seen for a while. I think an overall stipple would let the fabric be the star of this quilt.
ReplyDeleteReally cute quilt. Love the donkeys. I would probably stitch in the ditch and then try to do some hand quilted designs.
ReplyDeleteSew cute!!
ReplyDeleteI would hand quilt this quilt going around the middle square in a contrasting wonky line...it is a Wonky Donkey after all!! I would have the wonky stitching done in the colours of the quilt contrasting where ever possible in an echo design...hope this makes sense...I could NEVER be a pattern writer!! I would have to draw a picture of EVERYTHING!! Take care and thanks for the chance to win!!
Paulette
I would use a combination of squares and lines. What a fun print.
ReplyDeleteI am new to quilting and I have a TON of perle cotton around from my embroidery days, so I think I'd hand quilt it with perle cotton in straight lines.
ReplyDeleteSuch an awesome quilt! I love your photo shoot.
ReplyDeleteI'd hand-quilt, and since I don't have the creative gene (just the following-instructions gene) I'd do it just how you did - circles!
ReplyDeleteI've been a huge fan of the dense straight-line quilting everyone seems to be doing nowadays! Love the pictures, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so great on a donkey!!! I would probably do straight line quilting because I am new to quilting but would love to try free motion quiltin.
ReplyDeleteToo cute!! I think I would do random lines (vertical, horizontal and diagonally) by machine, and then some random hand quilting with a thick floss in the bright colors around a few of the wonky squares.
ReplyDeleteFantastic job on the quilt! I really do like your circle quilting. I think this is perfect for colorful hand quilting thread. GREAT colors you used for solids - love it all!!
ReplyDeleteThe circles look really great on this quilt and I love the idea of doing some machine quilting to stabilize it before hand quilting. I will definitely be trying that out!
ReplyDeleteSince these donkeys already have their boots on, I think some big rain drops would be appropriate.
I love piecing, not so much quilting. I'd probably send it out to be quilted! Love those donkeys!
ReplyDeleteI just love Wonky Donkey!
ReplyDeleteI would quilt it just like you did.
I wouldn't change a thing.
Thanks for the giveaway!
This is just too darn cute! If I won, this quilt would definitely be going on my daughter's bed... she LOVES donkeys.
ReplyDeleteJennifer :)
I love this quilt! I think I may toy around with machine quilting some free motion wellies.
ReplyDeleteJaclyn
I have been quilting for years, but new to the quilt blogs. I love all the modern patterns and designer fabric. My daughter will be a sophmore in college this fall and moving into a house with some of her fellow frisbee teammates. I want to make them some fun quilts for their house, I think they would love one with the donkeys!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! First I'd quilt in the ditch to stabilize it, then I'd do some hand quilted wellies and flowers using some hand dyed threads I've been saving.
ReplyDeleteI love these fabrics!! I have giggled over it ever since seeing it.
ReplyDeleteI would probably quilt by hand which would mean the lines would be wonky even if I marked the fabric. I also like to quilt my initials and date, sort of embroidery style.
Thanks for the chance to win!
I think I'd keep him 'penned' in with straight quilting around the blocks and maybe a carrot or two to tempt those donkies...and all definately on the machine!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great give away. I hope I win. As for me I'm a straight line quilter. Maybe around the blocks to emphasise their wonky appeal.
ReplyDeleteI can not believe I am seeing this the day after I fell in love with the fabric. I would not change a thing on the quilt but might embroider on the back of it a rain cloud and drops falling onto the donkey. Thank you for the ideas and giveaway
ReplyDeleteHand quilting to bring out the wonkiness is a little intriguing to me on this quilt.
ReplyDeleteI have seen the fabric on Laurie's blog and now i FOUND YOURS . IT IS REALLY nice and to make it better I love donkeys also. I hope I win.
ReplyDeleteProbably I would quilt this with some organic line quilting. Love the pattern, love the fabrics. Thanks for a chance. jessierey at msn dot com
ReplyDeleteI have LOVED that donkey fabric since the moment I first saw it! Since I have a donkey, anything donkey that I can find I MUST have! I hope I win! Thanks for such a great giveaway, the quilt is great!
ReplyDeleteLove it (of course) Kate! Let's see, I would probably do some hand quilting on this one if I won - maybe around both the inner blocks and outer blocks.
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt. I'm not an accomplished quilter and quilt by hand. I would quilt in the ditch around the squares/rectangles. For the blocks, would quilt around the donkeys and boots to make them pop out in relief. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI love the quilt and the fabrics! Now who would have thought of wellies on donkeys?! And I love your idea of doing circles. Very cool.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd quilt around the donkeys and then do circles in the non-donkey blocks. Fun stuff!
Thanks for doing this!
Denny
I love the colours - so fresh and clean! Suz
ReplyDeleteKate:
ReplyDeleteI am a novice but think I would do straight quilting with this great fabric. Love it.
Helen
You designed the perfect quilt for this adorable fabric!! I believe I would have to try to replicate what you did quilting-wise...fabulous!! We have a friend with donkeys; our favorite is a little girl named Junebug!!
ReplyDeleteI love the fabric! I also really liked how you hand quilted the circles, since there is so many straight lines. I'm not good enough for circles, but I would hand quilt around the blocks.
ReplyDeletekell22 @ cox.net
love it love it love it! i would quilt it with wonky squares to mimic the blocks.
ReplyDeleteLove the pattern, the name is so catchy and fun, but the donkey..the donkey is fabulous. I would hand quilt in a perle cotton a double line around some squares and machine sew lines in regular thread around the others. In one corner I would have to outline a donkey and boot shape for fun.
ReplyDeletewhat is not to love, the pattern, the fabric, lol..the donkeys and boots! (sorry, i have so wanted a donkey! hubby does not yet get it but he is coming around!)
ReplyDeleteI am thinking a more retro styled log cabin with thicker logs and donkey pic's in the center squares. A classic with a farm animal bit twist!
I love donkeys. Your quilt is super and colourful. Lets hear it for the donkeys.
ReplyDeleteWhat isn't to love about donkeys? I love the way he so stylishly wears the Wonky Donkey quilt. I would most definitely do squares. I'm too scared to do too much wonkiness! :)
ReplyDeleteI love the donkey in boots and love how you photographed the quilt!! Clever.
ReplyDeletei would quilt big boots all over it. Thanks for the giveaway
I would wonky quilt it with a hint of hee-haws throughout.
ReplyDeleteI love it!
Hey, I was hoping THE Wonky Donkey quilt would be the prize! Hehe. Well I would probably do wonky straight lines and raindrops.
ReplyDeleteI am very new to quilting and i think your circles look beautiful, hope I can also try it.
ReplyDeleteHow cute would in be to make a template of a wellie and hand quilt that all over the top?
ReplyDeleteI love your donkey! The photo of him peaking over the clothesline is now the background on my computer screen to make me happy at work. :-)
This fabric is just too cute! I would quilt it using my typical triple loop echo pattern - make a tear drop loop, then echo it back, and then again a third time.
ReplyDeleteI love straight lines when the fabric is this cute.
ReplyDeleteYaay I am soooo happy your pattern for this is out! I would definitely do some shadow quilting around the squares with my machine =0)
ReplyDeleteI love this fabric!! Can't wait for it to come to my house. The pattern you chose/designed is perfect for this quilt.
ReplyDeleteI love that you actually had a donkey to photo the quilt with! I'd probably do straight stitching with a machine. No way I'll hand stitch!

Thanks!
I love the fabric and I love what you did with it! I would quilt it with lots of wonky swirls!
ReplyDeletei love love love that fabric and quilt!
ReplyDeletei would machine quilt it in straight lines
thanks!
I think this would look good with random wonky (mostly straight) lines.
ReplyDeleteFizzy is absolutely adorable, and if I won, I would quilt this with bubbles and swirls because that would make me think of Fizzy!!

Too cute! I'd quilt little circles all around except for the donkey!!
ReplyDeleteQuilting, hmmm. Probaby just around in "squares" that mimic the wonky lines of the quilt squares.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd have to go with a sort of cross hatched quilting if tat makes any sense? Your pattern showcases the fabric perfectly! :)
ReplyDeleteFree motioning a boot footprint would be fun....as if it's the bottom of the donkey's wellies :)
ReplyDeleteI like to hand quilt after machine piecing but following the blocks on the machine could look well and be a whole lot faster.
ReplyDeleteThat has got to be about the cutest thing ever. I love the actual donkey poses! Priceless!
ReplyDeleteI'm just finishing up the binding on my first quilt but I like to challenge myself. I think I'd have to attempt quilting some boots either by machine or *gasp* by hand.
oOo! so cute! i would love to make my own wonky donky quilt. i would probably quilt mine using some wonky intersecting lines. eek!
ReplyDeleteYou are so awesome Katie! I love the quilt. So nice and bright and the donkeys are adorable. Fizzy is pretty cute too.
ReplyDeleteI would do a combo of machine and hand quilting. I would probably try the circles because it looks so good, but I have doubts that my circles would be as round as yours.
XO Amelia
I think a wonky quilt would be nice with straight quilting lines.Like both the fabric and the quilt but love the real donkey!
ReplyDeleteThis is great! I love the way you varied the colors of the binding. Your circles are also a great idea! I would love to quilt some Donkey ears on it, they're such a defining feature of the Donkey.
ReplyDeleteI really want to try those scribbles (not really sure if that's the right word) in the stars but then as I was typing would it not be cute to do donkeys? not sure if you could really understand that they were donkeys but hey, I like to go against the grain :-)

ReplyDeleteso bright and fun! and of course i absolutely love the real life donkey - what a great addition to the photo shoot!
ReplyDeleteI'd probably quilt this with random straight lines - I think they're kind of fun and I think they'd pair well with the wonky nature of the quilt!
thanks for a great giveaway - Laurie's donkey fabric looks fabulous (I still haven't had a chance to actually use any yet!)
Absolutely adorable! I would probably end up just stitching in the ditch to quilt this since the actual quilting part is not my strong suit. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt and the donkey is even better! Seems he loves it too! I think hoof print shapes as the quilting would look great (and not too difficult?).
ReplyDeleteJust can't get over how cute this pattern and fabric is - we actually had a town donkey and she just passed away. She was very popular with the tourists. I believe she was 28 years old. Her favorite treat was carrots, so I think I would do a carrot top top-stitch when I did the quilting.
ReplyDeleteThank you for offering up such a fabulous giveaway!
Dee
Great pictures and lovely quilt. I have been on a straight line quilting kick so I would probably do that. But I also love quilting in wavy lines from one corner to another. I might try that instead. I will have to win to figure it out. :) Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteWonky Donkey is so adorable!!! I'm not sure how I would quilt it--maybe in swirls or around the blocks.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the fun giveaway!
I love the pattern and fabric - thank you for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI would hand quilt this very cute fabric.
Colleen
I have to say that is one of the cutest things I have ever seen! I just love those boots! Especially on the donkey. I would have to let my amazing sister machine quilt my quilt because she is super talented and always does and amazing job on everything I give her!
ReplyDeleteMr Fizzy is adorabel and so is that quilt! I love it :-)
ReplyDeleteLove, Love, LOVE that pattern. The fabric is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Dionne
