Blowing in the Wind - A New Quilt

It was such a thrill to see my quilt in Homespun magazine this week (the first project in the "Oh-So-Fresh" issue)!

Australian Homespun is a brilliant magazine, and so it was particularly humbling to have my profile featured on their pages.

I originally (and not very creatively) called this quilt "Baby Mobile", as that was the idea behind the its creation. Lovely little "pictures" of fabric hanging from a mobile. It features amazing fabric from two Australian designers - Saffron Craig's gorgeous owls and trees and Sprout Design's wonderful little squirrels and birds in trees (they tied in so well together). The name was changed to "Blowing in the Wind", which I think is great.

It was fun making a second (girly) version using Saffron's Fields range (in the squares)

and trying a different way of quilting the same design. Fortunately its a quick one to make.

So, if you're interested in making your own "Blowing in the Wind" quilt - you can find all the instructions in Homespun Vol 12 - 2 issue! I'm not sure if its available overseas - sorry!  Australian Homespun is available overseas - yay - contact me if you have trouble finding it.

  2. I love it, particularly the boy version (as mother to two boys!) The two fabric lines work so well together almost as if theywere designed for each other. You have a great taste in fabric :)

  11. Inspirational. I now have to bring my fabric for my second eye spy and get you to help me put it together. I've been thinking too traditionally and not feeling happy with the designs.
    Your cousin in quilts.

  16. Saffron is to die for! I just wish with all my heart that the best designs in the world (all Australian designers) were not $40 a yard.

  26. Kate, how wonderful to have another published quilt. The Australian quilting magazines are far superior to any USA ones that I've come across. Congratulations.

  27. I love this quilt! I've only seen this magazine in the states online. A subscription costs WAY too much and the single issues are a few months behind. I love the Sprout fabric you used but, again, the cost per yard is crazy expensive and shipping cost on top of that make this a quilt I'll just have to drool over. Thanks for sharing with us.

  28. Love this quilt! If it helps for those in Canada, Chapters book stores carry the current versions of Australian Homespun.
http://www.kelanifabric.com.au sells these fabrics in metric fat quarters, and has reasonable shipping to Canada, which kept the cost down for these beautiful, hand screened, fabrics.
