The Other Side

Thanks to everyone who wished me well with Grace and offered suggestions. I really appreciated it, and I'm sorry I haven't been able to reply to emails lately. Torren's House was fantastic! The nurses were so lovely and supportive. I thought they might do controlled crying, but their methods were really very gentle. Grace was a superstar and slept beautifully for most of the time there. But when we got home she reverted to her old ways. I've persisted with the routine and techniques that we established (making sure she's full by giving a couple of options at meal times, wrapping tight but not making her too hot, and trying to stick to the routine) and I can certainly see improvement now, but we still have a way to go. I'm feeling really confident now that there's nothing seriously wrong with her and that she's just petite and not a huge eater.

It was nice having a little holiday away while Grace did all that sleeping, and I did a little bit of quilting. You can imagine my delight when my sister, Amelia, gave me Anna Maria Horner's new quilting/embroidery threads as an early birthday present (while we were away on a quilting weekend a few weeks ago).

I fell in love with Anna's cushion, so I'm copying it!

It was my birthday yesterday and Todd got me an i-phone, and I love it! I was planning on treating myself to one when I lost 10kg, but I haven't been making too much progress on that front (sitting on the couch nursing a baby each evening, eating junk food in front of the TV doesn't help). I'm loving taking some photos with my new camera (this one is with the instagram app).

It's so handy having a camera with you at all times to catch those fabulous moments when your son and nephew get covered in mud from head to toe!

Any good apps you can suggest? (And if you don't know what I mean, don't worry, I didn't either).

  1. Happy Birthday - what lovely gifts. Do you happen to know where Amelia sourced the AMH threads. I would love some but have not been able to find them in Aus and the shipping on these from the US is a killer.

  6. Happy birthday!!! I love my iphone, but I'm sure I'm only using a tiny bit of the technology I could be. I love the hipstamatic camera app.

I'm sorry to hear Grace hasn't been sleeping and that you've had worries. I've missed a lot of blog reading lately. I hope with a bit more time and growing, everything will be resolved. Be gentle with yourself. Sleep deprivation is so very real and difficult. It's been years since I felt that way, but I can remember it well - I send my hugs & best wishes to you!

  8. So good that you could get some support for Grace and yourself...I admire you for going to a sleep/feed clinic and for practising demand breast-feeding, baby attchment via a sling/carrier and co-sleeping. Such gifts and sacrifice that will be rewarded once you both come out of this season of your lives. And Happy Birthday too! Cheers, Fiona

  10. Happy Birthday!
I got an iphone for my bday also! My favorite app is free, called P Tracker Lite - and, it's for tracking your period! :D I pretty much knew when mine was coming of course, but this app also lets you track symptoms, moods. I really like it for also tracking other physical symptoms that I have been wondering how often bother me (specifically my sinuses).

  12. Hi Kate, I am usually a lurker but I love your work. I had similiar issues with my daughter at that age. I finally figured out that she liked the PJ's I was wearing when I nursed her. They were Vanity Fair silky feeling pj's. In despiration one night I took the shirt off and cut it into pieces. It was 2 am. I gave her a piece and put her in her crib. She immediately put it on her face like I was nursing her. Draping it as it fell when she was nursing. It was unbelievable. She was 6 months old. It comforted her so much. I cut up all of the pj's and we used them for years. Actually, I still have a couple of pieces tucked away. It did not solve all of her sleeping issues but it did seem to give her lots of comfort. I hope this helps. PS: My daughter is now 23 and loves silky feeling blankets aka minke. I wish you the best of luck. Hang in there. Beth

  13. That brings back hard memories of our first! Swaddling was the only thing that saved us. We swaddled until she was six or seven months old. Hope she gets the hang of it soon!

What out for the iPhone. Very addicting! ;0)

I really like this app (When I remember to use it. ;0p): http://www.homeroutines.com

  14. Happy belated birthday! Hope Grace is getting on a better schedule, which will undoubtedly make all of you much happier! I haven't put this on my phone yet, but when and if you go to the movies, there is an app called runpee that tells you when you can take a potty break, and what you will miss while you are gone.
