Miscellany "Square in There" quilt top

Michelle from Cloud9 Fabrics (who, by the way, is running a fantastic giveaway here at the moment) was kind enough to send me a bundle of Julia Rothman's Miscellany fabric last year. They're different from what I usually use... darker... more sophisticated, but I've loved having a play with them (I've finally started to quilt again - yay!)

I decided to use my There's a Square in There pattern, but this time pair them with a black background. I was really nervous because I've never used black before, especially not big chunks of solid black. But I needn't have worried, I think the black's a striking contast to Julia's beautiful fabrics (although I found the black difficult to photograph without washing out the other colours) . I felt so grown up working with these fabrics!

It was nice using a pattern this time, rather than writing a new one- much faster - especially since it was one of my 'stack and slash' ones.

So, now I'm trying to decide whether to quilt it like my last one, with the double hand quilted squares, or whether to follow the design and quilt around each fabric square. The double quilted squares were a pain in the butt to do, but look really effective.

Speaking of writing new patterns, I have a couple of quilt patterns almost ready for release. It's quite a process writing a new pattern and I would appreciate a fresh set of eyes . Is anyone interested in proof reading a pattern for me? Thanks for the great response - I think I have enough now!

  1. I love the black! The quilt looks so dramatic!
I will proof read for you if you like.

  2. I would be more than happy to proof read for you :)
Love the quilt - very, very cool!

  3. I'd be thrilled to proof a pattern for you, Kate! And this is one neat quilt - I really need to give this pattern a whirl, too!!

  4. I love you, your style, and your patterns. I would love to proof read for you!!

  5. The black is so striking - great choice!

If you're still looking for someone to proof your pattern, I'd love to!

  6. wow, I wouldn't have guessed that it's a stack and slash pattern. It looks like you have proofreaders aplenty, but I'm available if you're still looking (I teach editing and proofreading, plus I'm a quilter!)

  7. Oh, what a wonderful opportunity. I'm in the need of making two babyquilts in the next months so i would be proud to again use some patterns from you ( shattered. Showers lies next to me and was thought to be used on one of the babyquilts). So here i am to proofread!
    Greetings from germany
Ps. The black one is stunning!

  8. I would love to proof read again for you if you still need some extra sets of eyes!

  9. That turned out great...I like how your dark background compliments the print fabric with the dark background...looking forward to your new patterns!

  10. Good call on the black - it is a very striking background for those gorgeous prints!

  11. I love black! I know what you mean about feeling grown up, it makes it look sophisticated.
Have you made it for anyone in particular?
2 new patterns at once you are a champion. I'd love to proof them :)
