As mentioned in this post, the inspiration for this quilt came from a piece of artwork in the TV show Grand Designs. I couldn't find the artwork but fortunately one of the commentors, Mitch, directed me to the designer's website that contains a picture of the sandstone artwork. When I first saw the website I said to my husband, "This wasn't the artwork, was it?" But he said, "Yes, that's the one." I had remembered the artwork quite differently. I suppose because I had only seen it for a split second, and then embellished it my mind.
I designed this quilt so that there was no wastage of fabric, and so you don't lose the fabric design across the pieced white line. I used six half yards of Alexander Henry June Bug - fabulous fabric isn't it. You could also use 4 charm packs (140 5" squares). I machine quilted double lines on the sashing and then hand quilted single white lines going through the blocks.
I like the way the quilting shows up on the back.
The pieced back is a nod to the blocks on the front. I kept it very minimal on the advice of my husband. He likes minimal.
This one is for my sister Kelly (it's going to be hard to let go - I'm very much in love with it!)
Thanks to my awesome pattern testers/proofreaders! The pattern contains step by step photographic instructions on how to piece curves (using pins). It takes a bit of time but certainly isn't hard. I would say this pattern would be appropriate for most quilters, but maybe not absolute beginners.
Now for the giveaway details. Unfortunately I don't have any left over June Bug fabric, but I do have this charm pack of 40, 5" squares of Denyse Schmidt's original Flea Market Fancy fabric, which could be turned into a mini Grand Designs quilt, or combined with her new FMF Legacy range that has just been released.
OR you may have fallen in love with Aneela Hoey's new range "A walk in the Woods". Your choice!
And ofcourse I'll throw in my Grand Designs pattern. Just leave a comment here telling me a favourite book - it could be one for children or adults (I know it has nothing to do with the quilt, but I'm after new ideas for myself and my kids!). I'll randomly pick a winner on Wednesday 14th March.
The Grand Designs pattern is available from my downloadable patterns page and will be 20% off while the giveaway is running. If you would like a hard copy please contact your local fabric store and ask them to get it in (Australian and New Zealand stores can order from HQW Distributors).

Lois Bujold Mcmaster is my favourite scifi/fantasy author - Cordelias honor is a great book i;ve read it a zillion times.
My son loves the rangers apprentice series and my daughter loves Roald DAhl but if you are after a uniquely australian book for them try to track down Bottersnikes and Gumbles be S Walker. i loved this book as a kid and my kids loved it too!
Love that quilt. It looks beyond my skills but I have pinned it for future ref. Once I get a bit more experience... Hi Kate, I LOVE this quilt! Yet another great pattern that I simply MUST try!!! I am checking my Arcadia at the moment. I am sure I had several charmpacks left.. fingers crossed it was 4... Ok. What did you actually ask... Ah.. charmpack. FMF please if I win. And book title.. One of my favourite writers is Kate Grenville. I started with the Lieutenant but then found her River books. The actual book The Secret River is the fictional tale. However, the book is based on the real history of her grandfather who was deported from London to Australia after some minor supposed theft (the way that happened at that time) and even though she of course wasn't there, she has taken the facts and imagined the story. The second book, Searching for the Secret River, is explaining her search for the facts and the actual facts. The books together are not only great to read but a fascinating piece of history well worth reading. Lately I have gone mad on Kate Mosse. Labyrinth (read that first)Sepulchre and the Winter Ghosts. I am waiting with baited breath for Citadel to come out but it has not been released yet. Any day now!
ReplyDeleteCan I enter? We love Dr Suess...any of the books really but at the moment it is "I can read with my eyes shut"!
ReplyDeleteHowls moving castle is a favorite of mine or any of Diana Wynne Jones books! They're great for kids. Full of imagination and fun!

ReplyDeleteAdult great read - Alan Bradley series - first is "Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie". Mystery and fun! thanks!

I love your Grand Designs quilt! It's so beautiful. My favourite children's books are Possum Magic & Goodnight Moon. Thanks for a lovely giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThat's a family hairy loom, as we like to say, very lovely work.
ReplyDeleteAs for book recommendations, I go for a certain style of book, not elaborate plots, but extremely thoughtful characters, big on emotional development. One of my favourite of recent days has been A Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. This particular one, written in the 50's is not really fiction, but more an ode to all women of all times. It talks about the conflicting demands on a womans time, from her family, her friends, her peers and lastly herself. It's amazing because it's so modern and yet literally taken it's not at all. I've gifted it to many friends and even have a spoken word version on my ipod.
I love this quilt, it's just beautiful! My favorite children's book is Goodnight Moon, my daughter and I read it all the time. One of my favorite books is The Book Thief. It's one of those books that I still think about even though I read it years ago.

Gone with the Wind, Marjorie Morningstar, The French Lieutenant's Woman, The Remains of the Day, Mr and Mrs Bridge, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, The Talented Mr Ripley. Hey, I just noticed they were all made into movies:)
A classic for adults is "Rebecca" by D du Maurier. And a cute child's book is "Ping", another classic. Your quilt is lovely! Great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteyou design is so so lovely Kate. it looks magical with the Junebug fabric!

I teach middle school social studies and we are in the process of integrating social studies and language arts. I'm taking it as an excuse to reread all my favorite YA historical fiction. My favorite is always a tie between "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" but I've got a stack of new books to check out. My students are keeping a countdown until the Hunger Games movie comes out, because I mentioned that I would have to read the book before I saw the movie. For some reason they have a hard time with the notion that I don't have to watch it in the theater. They *love* the whole series.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway. My favourite book which I'm currently re-reading for the first time in years is Little Women. I've also added the sequels to my Kndle to read once I've finished.

ReplyDeleteOne of the best books for 10-11 year olds is Colin Theile's 'Magpie Island'. My 8 year old with Aspergers read it and wept...very powerful.
I'm a horror book fan (which is why Alexander Henry's "Ghastlies" is my favorite fabric ever) so my recommendation recently is "Ashes" by Ilsa Bick... a post-apocalyptic zombie-type novel.

That quilt is gorgeous! My favorite book is Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. I can never get through it without crying.
ReplyDeleteMy kids loved reading The Hobbit together, which led into the Harry Potter series. I read the first Harry Potter book to my son, we read the 2nd one together and by the time we got to the third one, he was whipping through them all by himself and then waiting ... waiting ... waiting for the release of the next book. The last book was released when he was 17 making it a series that came to life during most of his childhood right through to his growing into a young man. This makes me especially fond of this book series. My son and I also went to all the movies together as they were released, right up to the last one when my son was 21. Happy memories.
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt Kate. Fav adult book Tully by Paulina Simmons and good Aussie read for the kids February Dragon by Colin Thiele.
ReplyDeleteOther than the Harry Potter series (of course) another favorite is the Hunger Games series.
ReplyDeleteFabulous mod quilt, I am a big fan of grand designs too! Favourite childhood book was The Magic Faraway Tree and as an adult I am currently enjoying The Book Thief. Love the FMF fabric.
