Fussy Framed quilt and Giveaway Day!
I've been really bad at posting progress on my Fussy Framed blocks, but I'm so pleased to show you the finished quilt top. I'm thinking of calling it "Fussy Framed Fairytales" - is that too much of a tongue twister? Maybe just "Framed Fairytales" or "Fussy Fairytales" would be better.
Anyway, I tried something new - floating squares - for the border and fortunately I love how its turned out, phew! With a combination of strip piecing and chain piecing it came together surprisingly quickly. I decided not to fussy cut the little squares in the border (that would have taken a lot longer) and I'm loving how some of the squares look like solid fabric. Aren't Heather Ross' fabrics just beautiful!
You can find my free tutorial for the Fussy Framed blocks here. I've also decided to write up the pattern for the whole quilt including instructions for the border, a list of the coordinating solids I used, and fabric amounts needed to make the entire quilt. Maybe some of you will find that useful. I'll let you know when its listed in my shop.
Enough about that... what about the giveaway?? You know I love choices, so how about these?
You might like 1/2 yard of Heather Ross' lightening bugs bike fabric straight off the bolt...
or 4 fat quarters of Cloud9's new "My Happy Nursery" organic fabric (it feels heavenly) in either the blue or pink colourway...
as well as any two of my patterns from my downloadable patterns page (including the pattern for the quilt shown above).
To enter just leave a comment, and if you want to be extra helpful you could suggest a baby girl's name. I find it hard enough coming up with names for my quilts, let alone baby names! With 3 months to go, I had better get cracking... This giveaway is open internationally and I'll randomly choose a winner on Friday 17th Dec. Make sure you leave me a way to contact you if you win. Thanks - comments now closed.
I'm off to see if I can snag some Giveaway Day goodies. Thanks Sew Mama Sew for hosting such a fun event!
Addit: I'm loving all of the baby name suggestions! They're really making me smile ... thankyou.

What a generous giveaway! Thank you for the opportunity! Names, names, names... I've never been good at names either. But I've always liked the name Simone.
ReplyDeleteThis would be the best present to either of my two friends who just had baby girls! - One was named Rhylee Sophie and the other Isabel Joy!
ReplyDeletei only have boys (3 of them...) so no girls names. sorry. ;)
ReplyDeletebut a great giveaway and good luck with the baby.
I like the simplicity of Framed Fairytales.
ReplyDeleteMy little miss is named Merryn Rose. Kind of an old name but simple and not common. I like simple that stands alone.
That quilt is lovely! I've not really been a fan of random placements before, but it's the perfect mix of symmetry and wonkiness :D
ReplyDeleteI think "Lilah" is a lovely girl's name too.
Thanks for the chance in the giveaway!
I've just used some heather ross for the backing of a quilt I made for my niece Maia's christmas. It's lush isn't it? I've always had a secret liking for Vivienne..
ReplyDeleteafter christmas this is the first quilt I am going to make! So glad you posted the tutorial, thanks! And a baby girls name...I have always loved the name Charlotte!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful fabrics. Girls are so special and fun to dress up. Our princess is Chloe. Best of luck choosing a name! I have been checking out your blog for a little while (since hubby recognised your hubby as they served in the Perth Mission at the same time)
ReplyDeleteI like Chamonix:) Thanks for the great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteadeylim@gmail.com
Thanks for the great givaway. I suggest Charlotte.
ReplyDeletegabylec at hotmail dot com
Your "Fussy Frames" (new suggestion!) quilt looks great!
ReplyDeleteI love the bike fabric!
If my boys had been girls their names would be Mikayla and Sienna, but we have decided that 2 is enough, so you are welcome to use my girl names!

ReplyDeleteGenevieve is a nice name and not very common.
Thanks for the giveaway... who can resist lightning bugs?
ReplyDeleteHmmm girls names? Very tricky...my little girls name is Maggie Mae.
Good Luck! x
What a great giveaway. I've always been partial to those ambiguous names that could either be a girl's name or a boy's name like Sam or Alex.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very generous giveaway. Thank you for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteGirls names, there are so many, my girl's name is Emma which of course is my favourite, and I also love the name Amelia (Millie for short). Best of luck with choosing a name.
Wonderful giveaway - so generous! How exciting to be picking baby names! I named my daughter Eve. Simple and classic, but you don't hear it everywhere. I like some of the other suggestions in the comments thread, too! Congratulations on your coming bundle of joy!

Thank you so much for the giveaway. I have two boys. My girl's name was going to be Ashley Tess. Ashley because I liked it and Tess for my Mom.
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt top, those blocks from your tutorial are on my very long 'to make' list!
ReplyDeleteAs for names as a School Psychologist I have a LONG list of don't go there names but I like the never out of style classics like Elizabeth and Meg and Heidi
Gorgeous giveaway. Thanks for the generosity. Good Luck choosing a girls name - it is sooooooooooo hard! My DD is Amelia (we call her Milly for short) though older names are gorgeous too (and unusual).
ReplyDeleteLove your stuff! If I had a girl, I would name her Jane or maybe Josie. I love sewing and have been planning to get into quilting sometime...! I have a giveaway going on too...stop by! parkke at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteHi, Kate! Love your quilt - and in your search for a quilt name, I'm reminded of a Saturday morning cartoon feature from when I was a kid called "Fractured Fairytales" - probably not quite what you're looking for, but I hadn't thought of them for years!
ReplyDeleteAnd a girl's name? I love the current trend of naming girls Grace, Faith or Hope - sometimes as a middle name, which kind of takes the sting out of the times you have to use their whole name - you remember "John Robert Michaels, you get down here!!"
I vote for Framed Fairy tales as the name - the quilt looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteGirls names - Amelia (my eldest) Michaela (my youngest) Evangeline, Dulcie, Camille, or my name is pretty classic - Claire
Can you tell I tend toward liking longer, romantic sort of names - it's because my real surname is very short, so we were always thinking up longer names in my family.
What beautiful fabrics! My Aunt suggested Amelia to me, and I thought it was a fantastic name. Also, Elizabeth Constance. I feel naming a child is really a tough responsibility, isn't it!
ReplyDeletebridgit at tomcook dot net
Great giveaway! My girls are Nora and Eloise....both great names!

They really finish off the quilt:) Well I still love my big girls name Emma ... an oldie but a goodie. But have a wee friend called Kaea (said K-eye-a) and I think that's pretty cool too. Well your name is my girl name, if we ever have a girl. :) I don't know your other kids' names so I don't know, but Piper is a name that I love every time I hear it but somehow it wouldn't work for our family. But maybe it'll work for yours!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog, I am a new follower! I am also a beginner quilter (finished my first one in October), are there any of your patterns that you would suggest for a beginner? lol I had a hard time picking out my daughter, Violet's, name too

ReplyDeleteI know that those are pretty common but I really like them!
Thank you for the chance to win and good luck with the name!
Fussy Fairytals is fabulous! As for a girls name, I love family names, so I'd look back through your ancestory for something interesting and a little uncommon for the little girl on the way.
ReplyDeleteYikes, I had three boys so I'm not sure how helpful I will be, but here it goes: Gwendolyn, Reagan, Liliana, Kailey, Finley, and Adelyn.

Beautiful stuff! Thanks for the giveaway. To find baby names, I go to the US Social Security website. Then I scroll through the popular names by decade. Personal preference is for old names, so looking at the popular names from yesteryear helps out :)

ReplyDeleteI'm not going to suggest a name; rather, a website. BabyNameWizard.com is the best baby-naming website evar.
ReplyDeleteIf you have any other kids, it gives sibling suggestion names. You can see graphed out where the names you like are popular. It's just so good.

Excellent giveaway - thanks for hosting it. I've always liked the name Molly, it just seems happy to me.
ReplyDeleteomy I do love those bikes.
ReplyDeleteGirl names...hm. I'm a big believer in using the meaning of a name to help decide. In my daughter's case, I went with Dulciana because it means 'sweet' or 'sweet sounding'. And so far she's a very ...well sweet tempered child.
But some names I just happen to like:
Violet, Emmeline, Audrey, Olivia, Lucy, Alice, and Helen.
senjosuki at yahoo

ReplyDeleteI was going to suggest Adelaide for a girls name (because I think it's beautiful and will probably use it myself someday) and then I remembered that you live in Australia and that might be weird! Hmmm, let's see, what about Kaye? No? Hehe! Okay, to be serious here's some names I think are pretty: Josephine, Lucy, Maeve, Elizabeth, Rose, Evangeline, Alice, and Eloise.

ReplyDeleteGirls names, I think should be traditional. If they have a trendy name, when they go to school there are 5 others with the same name. How about Sharon or Elizabeth. Cora or Clara. Grace or Victoria.?
Ooooh what a fabby giveaway! Girls names were never a problem here - Chloe and Phoebe were my first choices which went to my two cats, then Jessica but my cousin named his girl that. Then Amelia, which is what we named our girl twin 3 years ago (the boy was much harder to name, but we went with James -a good family name). Enjoy your last 3 months xx
ReplyDeletesome of my favs are....Ava, Anna-Sophia, Sophie, Audrey and Mia. When we were naming Isabella we had a few names in the pool and to this day I kinda wish we had named her either Berlin or Kierra. All of our sons are named after cities, so either one would have been perfect, but my husband really wanted the name Isabella so I finally gave in. It does suit her to be named after a queen.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the quilt and the boarder is a stroke of genius!
Love your patterns!
ReplyDeleteBaby girl names...I am bad at this too. I like Anabella, Isabella, Mia, Julianna, and Ava are some of my top names.
Congrats on your pregnancy.
Oh my! What wonderful fabrics and giveaway. Thank you for the opportunity to enter and win!
ReplyDeleteI'm really fond of the name EMMA. It was my grandmother's name and I've always loved the name.
Cheers!

How bout sadie? Love that name. Your quilt is great, good use of fussy cutting!
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine just got a girl whos name is Kaja, which I find quite nice...
ReplyDeletei love the tongue twister name for the quilt. and the quilt itself is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI love your fussy quilt- what a fantastic way to show off the cuteness of the Fairytale fabrics. Alas, I have no name suggestions. All I can say is: if you name a child something unique, make sure you have a good story of where you got the name from, because the kid'll get asked a lot. Ask me how I know.

Wonderful quilt. I have girls Hannah, Sarah and Abby. Feel free to use one. They are the best daughters! I so want to try your 'Off the Rails' pattern. nanasew at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI like feminine names that are not too popular ~ nothing worse than having your lase name initial attached to your name all through school so you can be differentiated from the other girls in your class with the same name :p
ReplyDeleteOur girls are: Elayna, Chantel, and Alyssa and our other picks were Brianna, Chelsea, and Courtney.
THANKS for the chance at such a GREAT giveaway!

ReplyDeleteI've always been a sucker for French girl names like Chantelle, Lucie, Isabelle. I also love Tess.
Names are hard. Having an unusual name for myself I wanted a "regular" name for my daughter. Somewhere in the middle might have been better.
ReplyDeleteFirst I must say that your Fussy Fairytale quilt top is incredible! WOW.
ReplyDeleteAnd for baby girl names I like Mirah, Isla or Stella :)

That Heather Ross fabric is so fabulous and seems to be such a rare find these days. I love it. But the Cloud9 fabrics are beautiful too. What a lovely giveaway!
ReplyDeletestashavalanche[at]gmal[dot]com
Oh I love the 4 fat quarters of Cloud9's new "My Happy Nursery" organic fabric.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I've always loved the name Ayda. My cousin's baby is Catherine Ayda. So pretty!
Wow Kate, this is an incredible giveaway -- thanks so much! As for your daughter, I think she'll absolutely enjoy that new quilt, too...What do you think of Charlotte?
ReplyDeleteWell, my daughter is named Kate so that probably isn't much help! Some alternate names for us were Paige, Alia, Rachel and Megan. If I had to name a baby girl today and my husband had no say, I'd probably name her Charlotte after my grandmother and call her "Lottie."
ReplyDeleteLove the fabrics and the blog! Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI love the fussy fairytales quilt, its a beautiful display for those lovely fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI'll give you our two names... we wanted a little traditional, a little funky so we have one Lilian and one Mirabel. I also lovelovelove the name Clare.
jshen37@gmail.com
Thanks for the great giveaway! I'll give you two unusual names - my granddaughters are Kierxan and Zylah.
ReplyDeleteAwesome giveaway Kate. We found it hard to decide on a name. I poured over books and finally found the winner one night while we were having diner at The Hills Bowling Club. The winning name for our baby boy was . . . Gabriel. Of course it is inevitably shortened by his friends & us to Gabe ( but we liked that about the name). Would the girl version go with your surname. That is such an important consideration.
